Fusion needs more than theoretical design & testing:
It needs real-world validation

The validation facility VNS provides exactly that: A neutron-beam-driven tokamak operating with a continuous Deuterium-Tritium (DT) plasma. Designed as a volumetric neutron source, it replicates the 14 MeV environment of future fusion power plants – enabling the qualification of key components including breeding blankets and fuel cycle systems, tritium handling and remote maintenance technologies
These systems are essential across all fusion concepts, from tokamaks to stellarators and inertial confinement – making the facility a truly enabling platform for the global fusion community.
Proposed by EUROfusion, recognized by leading fusion experts and supported by the Fusion Expert Group, this facility is a critical milestone not only for our own fusion strategy – but closes the gap between research and operational readiness by serving as a testing platform for future reactor developers worldwide.

Radioisotopes: Fusion's first commercial breakthrough

While most fusion projects remain focused solely on long-term energy production, our VNS facility unlocks a unique commercial opportunity in the near term: the production of high-value medical and industrial radioisotopes.
Enabled by the facility’s continuous DT operation and 14 MeV neutron environment, this is the first viable business case in fusion — offering the potential to generate meaningful returns on infrastructure investment well before grid-scale fusion becomes reality.

He has successfully built ventures, led organizational growth, and managed complex business portfolios in high-tech environments.

Christian Bachmann

Technological Advisor Fusion Technology

An engineering graduate with two decades in fusion development, Christian spent 7 years in ITER design integration and 12 years as part of the DEMO central team. Most recently, he serves as chief engineer for the VNS concept, giving him a unique hands-on perspective on what it takes to bring fusion systems from concept to reality.
